Top College Seniors in 2008 – Defensive Backs

by on Sep.06, 2008, under Uncategorized

Cornerback:

Malcolm Jenkins – Ohio St.
Mike Mickens – Cincinnati
Alphonso Smith – Wake Forest
Darius Butler – Connecticut
Kevin Barnes – Maryland

This is a deep year at CB. Jenkins is one of the most talented corners to come out in a while. He has everything you look for in a corner. He’s a lock for the top 10. There are some concerns about Mickens’ size and speed but make no mistake, he’s a legitimate cover corner. He’s a lock for round 1 unless he has a poor season. Butler and Barnes have great size and great speed but need to learn to be more physical. Both are good bets for round 2 and possibly round 1 if they have big seasons. Smith is undersized but makes up for it with aggressiveness and attitude. He’ll need a big season to climb into round 1 but round 2 or lower is more likely.

Sleeper seniors: Dominique Johnson- Jackson St. and Victor “Macho” Harris – Virginia Tech
Junior to watch: Vontae Davis – Illinois

S:
William Moore – Missouri

Courtney Greene – Rutgers
Nic Harris – Oklahoma
Derek Pegues – Mississippi St.
Michael Hamlin – Clemson

This is another group that I would classify as solid but unspectacular. Moore has outstanding potential but must prove he’s more than a 1 year wonder at Free Safety. If he does, he’s a lock for round 1. Greene is a fierce, tackling machine who needs to improve his coverage skills if he wants to play Free Safety in the NFL. He’s a safe bet for round 2 and could creep up into the first with a very strong season. Harris and Hamlin are big, strong, aggressive Strong Safeties in the mold of Roy Williams. They’ll need to prove they’re not liabilities in coverage and if they do, they both could jump into round 1. Pegues is undersized but is like a QB in the defensive backfield. He could either play Free Safety or play CB for a Cover 2 team. That kind of savvy and versatility help his stock. He could go anywhere from late round 2 to late round 3 based on production and workout numbers.

Sleeper Senior: C.J. Spillman – Marshall
Junior to watch: Myron Rolle – Miami
