“The Butcher” has been cut; Ryan, too

by on Sep.01, 2008, under Roster Moves

Linebacker Abdul Hodge and punter Jon Ryan are finding themselves looking for work on Labor Day. Both Packers veterans were cut Monday, while Green Bay signed a needed long snapper and a new punter.

Replacing Hodge and Ryan on the Packers 53-man roster is punter Derrick Frost and long snapper Brett Goode. The Packers had a need for a long snapper due to the season ending injury suffered by J.J. Jansen in the team’s last pre-season game. The switch at punter is more of a surprise, as the sometimes inconsistent Ryan had steadily improved through the pre-season.

Josh Sitton will likely miss 4 games

Multiple reports say that Packers rookie guard Josh Sitton’s knee injury (sprained medial collateral ligament) will likely keep him out for the first month of the season. Sitton had been working with the first team offensive line. Many reporters, including the Green Bay Press Gazette’s Pete Dougherty, think an improving Tony Moll could take Sitton’s place at starting right guard.

Justin Harrell added to PUP list, Wynn cut

Justin Harrell will miss the first six weeks of the season.

Justin Harrell will miss the first six weeks of the season.

Former Packers first round draft pick Justin Harrell will miss at least six weeks of the regular season, after being placed on the physically unable to perform list Monday. Harrell will undergo another surgery on his back. The Packers are not ruling out the chance that the former number 16 overall pick could still contribute to this year’s team once he returns. Though, the way things have been going, it should be “if” he returns.

Also Monday, the Packers cut four players including running back DeShawn Wynn.
