Talent on the Lines the Difference This Time

by on Sep.22, 2008, under Commentary, Game Recaps, Opinion

As it is often with professional sports, the team with the best players usually wins the game. And while it does not always hold true with football (look at last year’s Super Bowl), last night’s thrashing at the hands of the Dallas Cowboys was a reminder to the Packers that the Cowboys really are the most talented team in the NFC and they face an uphill climb to match them come January.
Felix Jones and Marion Barber III running for 217 yards contained a very specific message- the Packer defensive line is a potential long-term problem.

Packer Management rolled the dice in a big way when they kept just 3 defensive tackles on the roster after training camp (with Harrell on the PUP list into October), the thinking being that Cullen Jenkins will be able to fill a Justin Tuck-like role and Mike Montgomery or Kabeer Gbaja Bialmila adequate to fill in outside. On the Felix Jones 60 yard touchdown, it was Montgomery that allowed Jason Witten to seal him inside, allowing Jones to cut back and have nothing but green Lambeau Field grass between him and the end zone. Contrast that play to later in the game, with the exact same play run and Jenkins at right defensive end, the play resulted in a 5 yard loss.

The Slant (4) Weak Week 3 NFL Picks

by on Sep.18, 2008, under Commentary, Opinion

So Week 3 in the NFL is here…..and with it some more of my weekly picks. Its been called to my attention that some of you believe these picks to be actual NFL picks. I can guarantee you that every wrong pick here is done completely in jest. The right ones, yeah, I was serious about those.

Week 2 Results:10-6 (if I count the postponed game as a win…and I will)
Season Total: 20-12

Week 3 Picks

The NFL is Americas Pastime

Oakland Raiders at Buffalo Bills 12:00
Bills 23 Raiders 17: After the game Al Davis fires newly hired head coach William Shattner. Davis explained the firing by saying “He’s not the guy I thought I hired…I thought he was a star ship captain or a free spirited cop, turned out he was just a shill for internet hotel deals.”

The Slant (3) Week #2 in the NFL

by on Sep.11, 2008, under Commentary, Opinion

The Slant is a weekly article written by japf

Well, it’s another week, so here is another attempt at picking the games. I think I’m starting to get the hang of it. However, I should emphasize that these picks are for entertainment only. Well, they aren’t even for that….but don’t use them for betting purposes.

Last Weeks Results: 10-6
Week 2

SUNDAY 12:00 Titans at Bengals
Titans 23 Bengals 13: In a defensive battle the Titans come away with the victory. The Bengals suffer 22 false start penalties due to the fact that their team doctors incorrectly set Carson Palmer’s broken nose. Every time Palmer takes a deep breath his nose whistles. In the game, the o-line keeps thinking that an official has blown the whistle and they get out of their stances to see why…resulting in penalties. Later in the game, when the linemen finally learn to ignore the whistle, they are called for 8 late hit penalties.

SUNDAY 12:00 Bears at Panthers

The Slant (2)

by on Sep.03, 2008, under Opinion

Hi everyone. I decided that I would make an attempt at prognostication this year. After looking up what prognostication means, I decided to do so by picking each weeks NFL games. I will continue to do this all season, each week, until the powers that be decide I shouldn’t or until I start having a real lousy record or until its not funny anymore (don’t say it!!!).

Last Weeks Prediction Results: 23-0 (and there’s no proof to the contrary)

NFL WEEK 1 PREDICTIONS

THURSDAY NIGHT 6:00 Redskins at Giants
Giants 21 Redskins 17: Giants come from behind when Eli Manning completes a desperation pass to David Tyree who catches it no handed..between his butt cheeks for the game winning TD. Newly unretired DE Michael Strahan records 12 tackles and 3 sacks and makes informative yet interesting sideline reports throughout the game.

Favre at it again!

These are some comments I have heard & written…..

Poor, poor Brett, must have been torture not being the top topic in
sports for a whole two weeks

Jet Favre

Jet Favre

Favre, you are my favorite QB ever, but good god, be a man. You should
have broached to the subject like “Hey Ted, I’m thinking about coming
back.” Instead of sitting there like a little girl biting her nails
waiting to be asked to the prom.

You’ll see, as the season goes on, this is a man who was broken and
will never let this go. It’ll all come crashing down in the middle of
the season when he quits.

Favre really just can’t keep his mouth shut for 5 minutes can he?
We’ll see how much he wants to talk when he starts getting grilled by
the NY media. (continue reading…)

Brandon Jackson… The Leading Rusher for the 2008 Packers?

by on Aug.28, 2008, under Opinion

Brandon Jackson is pushing for more playing time

Brandon Jackson is pushing for more playing time

Anyone who follows the Green Bay Packers understands that there have been some changes recently in the offensive backfield. With a new, young quarterback in Aaron Rodgers set to learn on the fly and earn his stripes this season, coupled with the obvious need to put more emphasis on the running game while Rodgers gains invaluable experience, most are assuming that Ryan Grant will have a very good year. He very well could. However, there are several reasons to think that Ryan won’t be the best running back on Green Bay’s roster in 2008. That mantle may very well go to Brandon Jackson.

Grant burst onto the scene last year, and in what proved to be one of Ted Thompson’s best trades to date, rushed for nearly 1,000 yards in approximately a half-season’s worth of carries. He destroyed Seattle in the divisional playoff round after overcoming two horrible gaffes to start the game, and even though his performance was disappointing in the NFC Championship game, so was that of many other members of the team that night.
